Goorus News: October/November 2017

“If we don't change, we don't grow. If we don't grow, we aren't really living.” ~ Gail Sheehy

As many of you may already know, Jeff Perlman will be away in India leading a retreat for the next month. Nichola Dunne will also be out of town for a week visiting family. Susan Cambigue-Tracey will be participating in the Kansas International Film Festival where her film, “Sit Up & Change: Tales of Transformation” got picked up. During Jeff, Nichola, and Susan’s absences, we have made class coverage arrangements with some amazing guest teachers…some of whom you are already familiar with. Be sure to check our online schedule before heading over to class.

If you are not familiar with any of our guest teachers, give them a try.  Our substitute teachers have been carefully vetted and are hand-picked by the regular teacher.  “Sub” most definitely does not mean sub-par!

And, while many of us find comfort in routine and familiarity, it’s actually part of a healthy yoga practice to occasionally try out other teachers and even other styles of yoga.  It’s known as vairagya, or non-attachment.  Who knows?  You may learn a new way of doing an old routine!

On Friday, October 27, meditation expert Hilary Jackendoff & test prep/college admissions expert Josh Eckhaus will lead “The Night Before: A Test Anxiety Solution.” If you know a teen who is nervous about the SAT or ACT, sign them up for this first of its kind workshop at Goorus from 6:00 to 7:30pm.

On Saturday, October 28, Palisadians Jahna & Michael Perricone will lead “Savoring the Soundscape” at Goorus from 5:00 to 6:15pm. If bathing yourself in healing sound is your jam, grab your spot at

For the third year in a row, Jessica Miller* will lead “Self-Care With Reiki & Essential Oils” at Goorus on Saturday, November 4 from 2:00 to 4:00pm. This could be a good way to prepare for the upcoming holiday madness and, if nothing else, you’ll get to enjoy Jessica’s beautiful voice during savasana. If you can't make it to Jessica's workshop on 11/4, she will be guest teaching Urban Zen on October 29 while Nichola is away.

That’s all for now, folks. Hope to see you on your mat soon!

Gretchen Lightfoot

A Yoga Alliance RYT-500, Gretchen trained with Carmen Fitzgibbon, Thomas Taubman, and Gigi Snyder of YogaWorks in Los Angeles. Gretchen’s teaching experience includes YogaWorks, Neutrogena, Fancy Feet Dance Studio, the Palisades Library, the Palisades Rec Center, and one-on-one work with a number of private clients throughout LA.

Gretchen’s classes vary in style. Her weekday morning classes run from a balanced, all-level flow to a chilled-out yin practice, to an Iyengar-style wall practice. Sunday morning flow tends to be a little more energetic (expect music). Regardless of the style, Gretchen encourages practitioners to listen to their bodies and modify where needed.
