Goorus launches a new morning class...with a little help from our friends!

When my son was younger, I would fantasize about finding a weekday yoga class at 5:30 or 6am (before school) or at 8:30 or 9pm (after he’d gone to sleep for the night). Eventually, after an eight-year break from yoga, I managed to find a 6:30am class and made it work for my (by now) somewhat flexible schedule.

So, when local mom of two Amanda Michaels-Zech said to me back in January that 6:30am was too late for her morning yoga practice, I immediately understood. Amanda asked if we might consider adding a 6-7am flow class to the schedule.

Being hyper-local and wishing to respond to the needs of our community, we said we’d certainly explore the idea—IF Amanda thought she could rally at least 10 people at that hour of the day to practice consistently.

A powerful force, Michaels-Zech studied religion at UCLA and has been practicing yoga and meditation since her college days. She is a busy writer and photographer whose work has been published in L.A. Yoga Magazine, Om Magazine, well + GOOD, Yoganonymous, and the Palisadian Post, among others.

It took a few weeks, but Amanda and her friends—including the compelling Laurie Zink Haller, a local preschool mom who is excitedly making her way back to a yoga practice thanks to this early morning classwere able to spark the enthusiasm of a whole new group of dynamic and strong yogis who have committed to practicing at Goorus on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6am.

The new Organic Flow class began last Tuesday, March 22. This one-hour class is taught by Dev Rice, an RYT-500 hour yoga teacher who trained at YogaWorks and Hot8 and who is currently completing an additional 200-hour Kundalini training at Golden Bridge.

Dev’s wisdom, enthusiasm, and kindness shine through each morning practice.  His music is playful, inspiring, and uplifting. “I am just so grateful to guide this fun and dedicated group of students on their yogic journey, I feel that we all learn from each other.” says Dev.

The focus of all our classes is on the individual and on his or her specific needs. If there is something missing from the Goorus schedule, we do hope you will share your feedback with us, like Amanda. Likewise, if there is something you really love about our studio, we hope you’ll share that with us too.

Our community members inspire us to keep going. We hope you will be inspired to share this special place with others who you think may benefit from yoga.

Yoga seems to be happening everywhere, and we know you have lots of choices about where to practice. John and I deeply appreciate our students’ loyalty and commitment to Goorus.

And we hope you’ll join our new Organic Flow class with Dev Rice on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 6am!

Gretchen Lightfoot

A Yoga Alliance RYT-500, Gretchen trained with Carmen Fitzgibbon, Thomas Taubman, and Gigi Snyder of YogaWorks in Los Angeles. Gretchen’s teaching experience includes YogaWorks, Neutrogena, Fancy Feet Dance Studio, the Palisades Library, the Palisades Rec Center, and one-on-one work with a number of private clients throughout LA.

Gretchen’s classes vary in style. Her weekday morning classes run from a balanced, all-level flow to a chilled-out yin practice, to an Iyengar-style wall practice. Sunday morning flow tends to be a little more energetic (expect music). Regardless of the style, Gretchen encourages practitioners to listen to their bodies and modify where needed.
